File Types of the BitTorrent world
There are a lot of common file types in the BitTorrent world, mainly because everyone has their own personal preference as to what programs are best. I'll go over the most common ones.

1:.rar, .r00, .r01, .rnn, .001, .part1, .zip, .sfv, .s7, .tar.gz
These are all files that WinRAR can deal with for you. In most cases, you can find the file within a group that's just called ".rar" or "part01" and right-click on it, and choose "Extract Here" or "Extract to filename/", which will put the extracted file in its own folder within the existing folder. .sfv is a recovery record which can be used to repair (sort of) a broken .rar archive. If you fail to click on the .rar or the part01 file, the extracted file will be incomplete if it extracts at all. Be warned, pay attention.

2:.PAR, .p01, .pnn

These are parity files, used to reconstruct any missing parts of the archive. Ordinarily you will not have to do anything with them they are extraneous unless a part is missing or bad, in which case the torrent's creator should have fixed the archive before distributing the torrent. If WinRAR does give you a message about a missing or corrupt part, then get "SmartPAR" (Google for it) and open the .PAR file. The program will then check all the files and recreate any missing or damaged parts. For OS X, UnRarX should also process the PAR file.

3:.bin, .cue, .iso, .ccd, .mds, .mdf, .nrg

These are disc images. They can be burned to CD or DVD using any popular CD/DVD writing software, or they can be mounted to a virtual disc using Alcohol 120% or DAEMON Tools.

4:.cbr, .cbz

These are comics in a compressed archive. You can use a program such as CDisplay, a better version of the Windows Picture & Fax Viewer.

5:.avi, .mpg, .mpeg, .rm, .mov, .mka, .mkv

These are all movie formats. AVIs are usually DivX or XviDs, and installing the codec pack (Ace's or K-Lite) will allow you to watch them on VLC Media player or Windows Media Player, your choice.

.MPG and .MPEG are generally video CD files, super video CD files, or KVCD files. They're usually slightly lower quality than DivX/XviDs, but if you burn them using Nero's "Video CD" option, you can actually usually watch them on your DVD player. To do that, load Nero, select "CD" from the drop-down menu at the left of the wizard screen, and then select "Video CD" from the menu below. Add your .mpg and burn, it will play on your computer and should play on your DVD player. MOST legitimate releases of VCDs are in .bin/.cue format so you don't have to fool with getting the right settings.

6:.rm, .mov

rms are RealMedia files, and .movs are QuickTime video files. RMs suck, don't waste your time. .MOVs are horrible too, avoid them.

7:.mka, .mkv

MKAs and MKVs are the Matroska video formats. This format is seeing increasing popularity, but I wouldn't call it mainstream just yet.

8:.vob, .ifo

These are DVD movie files. If someone packages a DVD like this, they're dumb, but you can still get the movie.

9:.nfo, .readme

These are text files provided by the people who package the files that tell you how to install them. They will tell you where the crack is, how to apply it, what the serial number is, etc. Windows XP tries to open .nfos with the Windows System Information Viewer tool. So, the first time you try to open one, right-click on it and select "Open With...". Select Notepad or WordPad from the list and then check the box that says "Always use selected program to open this kind of file". You can do this with any file type in Windows, although sometimes you have to hold down shift and then right-click.

Bypassing The Download Limit Of Rapidshare
Its very easy to fool Rapid Share server if your IP address is assigned by your ISP....Just follow these simple steps

clean up IE or netscape cookie( In this case the one that belong to rapidshare website)

On Command prompt (Start>>> RUN >>> type "CMD")

type -----> ipconfig /flushdns <---Enter

type -----> ipconfig /release <---Enter

type -----> ipconfig /renew <---Enter

type -----> exit <--------Enter

Or save these commands in a bat file and run it everytime you need to fool Rapidshare server....Remember to clean up rapidshare cookie in your temp Internet files folder.

Now you should be ready to download as many files as you want from their server....Doesn't work if you have a static ip address, if you do i'd suggest you use an "anonymous proxy" instead...Rapidshare uses your IP add to determine how much that IP has downloaded and sets a limit for that IP [30megs an hour i think], so you have to fool rapidshare to believe your IP is different to get around this limit...change your IP by using a proxy server to connect to rapidshare.

Monitoring the system

There are various applications you can use to monitor the state of your
system at any given time. One of them is a program called CoolMon (www.coolmon.org) where you can monitor about 22 of the most geekiest system parameters like the temperature and speed of your system fans, the number of processes running, the total available memory on your hard disk and RAM, CPU utilization, etc. Each of these can be individually con. gured to appear on the interface. Best of all, this monitoring happens in real time. Better still, the program is free.
If you need more details than what is offered by Windows System Information or the Device Manager, try out an application called Everest Home Edition (www.lavalys.com). This application hunts through your hardware and software setup and extracts every piece of information you might need about your processor, motherboard, graphics card, hard disk and any other piece of hardware or software information that you might care to know about your computer.

Add the Links toolbar to My Computer

You know what would make a great toolbar? One where you could put your favorite applications and documents so that you could open them from any window at any time. Guess what? You can and here's how: click Start, then My Computer. Now right-click the toolbar and then click Links. You now have the Links toolbar on your windows, just like in Internet Explorer. Note: Make sure that Lock the Toolbars is not checked. Click on it to deselect it if it is.

The really cool thing about the Links toolbar is that it's completely customizable. Try this: Navigate to your favorite application and drag and drop its icon to the Links toolbar. You just created a shortcut. Do this again and again for as many applications as you want to appear on the toolbar.

Rename IE's Title Bar

If you would like to see a new name for Internet Explorer in its title bar, here's how:

1. Go to: Start >> Run
2. Type in: REGEDIT
3. Navigate to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main
4. Single click on "Main" to view its contents in the right pane. Scroll down and check to see if an entry "Window Title" exists. If it does not exist, then go up to Edit >> New>> String Value.
5. Right click on your new String Value entry and select "Modify" in the resulting menu.
6. In the "Value data" text box, type in whatever you would like the title bar to read, select OK when done. I have mine named "5 Star Support Explorer".

If you have done this correctly, the next time you open up Internet Explorer, you should see your new name at the title bar.

Note: Be sure to back up your registry prior to making any changes.

Power Off at Shutdown

Encourage Windows XP to Power Off at Shutdown

Do you want your computer's power to turn off when you shut it down, so you won't have to manually push the power button? Here's how:

1. Click Start, then click the Run command.
2. Type REGEDIT in the Open text box and click OK.
3. Navigate to the following Registry key: HKEY CURRENT USER\Control Panel\Desktop
4. Find the PowerOffActive entry in the right pane of the Registry Editor and double click on it.
5. In the Edit String dialog box, replace the 0 in the Value data text box with a 1, then click OK.
6. Restart the computer.

This does not work all the time as it depends on the type of hardware (motherboard) you have in your computer, but it won't hurt anything, so give it a try.

Locking the desktop
If you are leaving your computer for a while and do not wish to turn it off, but want to assure that no-one else can use the computer while you are away, locking the desktop is the best option.

By pressing WINDOWSKEY+L, you password protect your system just as if you had logged out or restarted the computer. The advantage is that any programs or processes that were running when you locked the desktop will stay open and running in the background, ready for you to resume work or play.

Renaming The Start Button !!!!

To rename the start button, you will need a hex editor.
My preference is UltraEdit

Copy the \windows\explore.exe file to a new name (e.g. explorer_1.exe)
With the hex editor, open that file and go to offset 412b6
You will see the word start with blanks between each letter
Edit it be any 5 characters or less
Save the file
Boot to DOS
Copy the existing c:\windows\explorer.exe to explorer.org
Copy explorer_1.exe to explorer.exe
You will also need to replace the explorer.exe in the c:\windows\system32\dllcache file as well with the new one.
Note: If the partition is NTFS and you can't access the files from DOS:

Start Regedit
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows NT \ CurrentVersion \ Winlogon.
Change the value of Shell from Explorer.exe to explorer_1.exe !!!!

3.Control Panel Restrictions
There are many general restrictions you can make to the Control Panel
1.Start Regedit

3.Create a new keys under Policies called System
4.You can then add DWORD values set to 1 in the appropriate keys
5.To re-enable them, either delete the key or set the value to 0

4.Disabling My Computer
In areas where you are trying to restrict what users can do on the computer, it might be beneficial to disable the ability to click on My Computer and have access to the drives, control panel etc.To disable this:
1.Start Regedit
2.Search for 20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D
3.This should bring you to the HKey_Classes_Root \ CLSID section
4.Delete the entire section.
Now when you click on My Computer, nothing will happen.You might want to export this section to a registry file before deleting it just in case you want to enable it again..

5.Disabling the F3 Search Key
If you want to disable the ability to use the F3 key from either the Windows Explorer or Internet Explorer
1.Start Regedit
2.Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions
3.Create a Dword value called NoFindFiles
4.Give it a value of 1
5.Reboot

6.Disabling the Right-Click on the Start Button
Normally, when you right button click on the Start button, it allows you to open your programs folder, the Explorer and run Find.In situations where you don't want to allow users to be able to do this in order to secure your computer.
1.Start Regedit
2.Search for Desktop
3.This should bring you to HKey_Classes_Root \ Directory
4.Expand this section
5.Under Shell is Find
6.Delete Find
7.Move down a little in the Registry to Folder
8.Expand this section and remove Explore and Open
Now when you right click on the Start button, nothing should happen.You can delete only those items that you need.Note: - On Microsoft keyboards, this also disables the Window-E (for Explorer) and Window-F (for Find) keys.See the section on Installation to see how to do this automatically during an install.

7.Eliminating the Right Click on the Taskbar
To eliminate the right click on the taskbar:
Start Regedit
1.Start Regedit
2.Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Policies \ Explorer
3.Add a DWORD and give it a name of NoTrayContextMenu
4.Give it a value of 1
5.Reboot

8.Hiding All Icons from the Desktop
1.Start Regedit
2.Go to HKey_Current_User \ Software\ Microsoft \Windows \ Current Version \ Policies \ Explorer
3.Right click on the right panel and add a New / DWORD
4.Name it NoDesktop
5.Give it a value of 1
6.Logoff or Reboot the computer
Now all icons are hidden on the desktop

9.Setting the Recycle Bin to Always Delete
You can set the recycle bin to always delete items (like holding down the shift key when dragging files to the recycle bin)
1.Start Regedit
2.Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Explorer \ BitBucket
3.Set the key NukeOnDelete to 1

10.To speed up the Start Menu
1.Start the REGEDIT program
2.Search for the word desktop
3.This should be in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT / CLSID / {00021400...
4.Right Click on the right panel
5.Pick NEW / String Value.
6.Name it MenuShowDelay, all one word.
7.Select a value from 1-10, 1 being the fastest.
8.Exit REGEDIT
9.Restart Windows
Alphabetizing your Start Menu
If you're like me you've probably installed lots of programs, so many in fact that if you go to try and find a program its actually becoming really hard because they're not alphabetized, new programs are stuck on the end, so forth and so on, well, this is a really quick, reallllly easy tip to organize your start menu in Windows XP (I think this also works in Win 98, but I'm upgrading my comp that has Win 98 and can't verify it). Here are the steps:
1.First click on the start button
2.Move your mouse to "All Programs"
3.Move your mouse to any of the folders there
4.Right Click
A box will open up, scroll to "Sort By Names" and click

Hibernate Your XP !
Hey your Windows XP has a very good but hidden feature !

Trick Advantage :
You can leave your work in between and shutdown the PC and resume it next time as it is !
Even I switched off my PC while writing this article and when I reopened it I resumed my article from where i left !

When you want to stop your work and shutdown(Keeping your programs open)
Do The Following :
1. Click start>Turn Off Computer
2. As the Turn Off menu comes up press 'Shift' and 'Stand By' changes to 'Hibernate'
3. Click Hibernate (Shift Kept Pressed)
Your xp will save the work and shutdown !

Now, when you switch it on again it will resume it again !

No loading of windows will take place and you will be resumed to your work as if you had just switched your monitor off and now on again !
Change Search and Run icons in Start Menu
It was impossible to get an Icon Package / Theme that would change ALL the icons in the Start Manu. The Typical Problem would arise with the Search and Run icons (I have disabled the rest...)

A small search in the registry and I managed to identify the "keys" that control the default icons.To change them you need to get in the registry, and that can be done by going to Start > Run (or WinKey+R) and typing "regedit" (yes, without the quotes...)

Right click an empty area of the desktop and choose properties. Select the "Desktop" tab and click "Customize Desktop".
On the General Tab place a checkmark in the icons you wish to appear on the Desktop.

Hide Users on the Welcome Screen

When you add an account for certain users with Windows XP, their user names will appear on the Welcome Screen. Sometimes a user needs to be added to a Windows XP machine, because he needs access (via the network) to resources on the machine, but he will not be physically logging in on the computer. You can remove his name from the Welcome Screen, while still maintaining the user account.

Start the Registry Editor
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows NT \ CurrentVersion \ Winlogon \ SpecialAccounts \ UserList \ Right-click an empty space in the right pane and select New > DWORD
Value Name the new value exactly as the Username Leave the Value data as 0

If you want to enable this user again on the Welcome Screen, either double-click the Username value, and change the Value data to 1, or delete the Username Close the registry editor

Make Your Cd Autorun

If you wanna make a autorun file for that CD you are ready to burn just read this...
1) You open notepad
2) now you writ: [autorun]
OPEN=INSTALL\Setup_filename.EXE
ICON=INSTALL\Setup_filename.EXE
Now save it but not as a .txt file but as a .inf file.
But remember! The "Setup_filename.EXE" MUST be replaced with the name of the setup file. And you also need to rember that it is not all of the setup files there are called '.exe but some are called '.msi
3) Now burn your CD with the autorun .inf file included.
4) Now set the CD in you CD drive and wait for the autorun to begin or if nothing happens just double-click on the CD drive in "This Computer"

Make Firefox Three Times Faster.......
Here is an old trick used by many peoples... Well it worked for me but not a big diffrence... i think it depends on PC.

here it goes.....

1. Typa about:config in the url bar in Firefox.
2. Type network.http in the filter bar.
3. Double click on network.http.pipelining to set it as true
4. Set network.http.pipelining.maxrequests to 30 (Firefox will then make up to 30 requests at a time)
5. Set network.http.proxy.pipelining as True
6. Rightclick anywhere and choose New -> Integer, name it nglayout.initialpaint.delay and make the value 0.
7. Restart Firefox

you can easily change or wipe out your Administrator password for free during a Windows XP Repair. Here’s how with a step-by-step description of the initial Repair process included for newbie’s.

1. Place your Windows XP CD in your cd-rom and start your computer (it’s assumed here that your XP CD is bootable – as it should be - and that you have your bios set to boot from CD)

2. Keep your eye on the screen messages for booting to your cd Typically, it will be “Press any key to boot from cd”

3. Once you get in, the first screen will indicate that Setup is inspecting your system and loading files.

4. When you get to the Welcome to Setup screen, press ENTER to Setup Windows now

5. The Licensing Agreement comes next - Press F8 to accept it.

6. The next screen is the Setup screen which gives you the option to do a Repair.

It should read something like “If one of the following Windows XP installations is damaged, Setup can try to repair it”

Use the up and down arrow keys to select your XP installation (if you only have one, it should already be selected) and press R to begin the Repair process.

7. Let the Repair run. Setup will now check your disks and then start copying files which can take several minutes.

8. Shortly after the Copying Files stage, you will be required to reboot. (this will happen automatically – you will see a progress bar stating “Your computer will reboot in 15 seconds”

9. During the reboot, do not make the mistake of “pressing any key” to boot from the CD again! Setup will resume automatically with the standard billboard screens and you will notice Installing Windows is highlighted.

10. Keep your eye on the lower left hand side of the screen and when you see the Installing Devices progress bar, press SHIFT + F10. This is the security hole! A command console will now open up giving you the potential for wide access to your system.

11. At the prompt, type NUSRMGR.CPL and press Enter. Voila! You have just gained graphical access to your User Accounts in the Control Panel.

12. Now simply pick the account you need to change and remove or change your password as you prefer. If you want to log on without having to enter your new password, you can type control userpasswords2 at the prompt and choose to log on without being asked for password. After you’ve made your changes close the windows, exit the command box and continue on with the Repair (have your Product key handy).

13. Once the Repair is done, you will be able to log on with your new password (or without a password if you chose not to use one or if you chose not to be asked for a password). Your programs and personalized settings should remain intact
